Key Questions to Ask When Interviewing for a Position at a RMT Clinic

Know these things before accepting a job at a clinic as a RMT or other professional.

  1. Is the clinic open on statutory holidays?
This is especially relevant if you plan to work on Mondays, Fridays, or Saturdays, as clinics may often close on these days. If you are allowed to work while the clinic is closed, keep in mind:
    • Are you comfortable being alone with your client?
    • Are you required to process payments?
    • Do you know how to reschedule clients if needed?
    • Can you provide change if a client pays in cash?
    • If a client is late or doesn’t show, do you have access to their contact information?
    • Can you make up for lost income if the clinic is closed?

  1. Who is responsible for notifying clients if you’re sick?
Clarify if it’s your responsibility or if the receptionist will handle it. Find out:
    • Will the clinic send emails or make phone calls to clients?
    • What is the process for same-day cancellations?

  1. Does the clinic withhold any payment?
If the clinic offers direct billing, there may be a delay in receiving payments, typically from 1 to 2 weeks. Make sure the clinic has a reliable process to ensure you’re compensated on time.

  1. Do you get paid for no-shows?
    • If the fee is 100%, will the clinic pay you regardless of whether they collect from the client?
    • If the fee is less than 100%, what percentage do you receive?

  1. Is there flexibility in scheduling?
    • Can you adjust your schedule if needed?
    • Are you given priority if new hours open up?
    • If another therapist leaves, are you eligible for their hours or room?

  1. What are the expectations when the front desk is unavailable?
    • Are you required to take payments, answer phones, or fold laundry?
    • Do you need to assist other clients with bookings or payments?
    • Should you leave notes on clients’ profiles or at the desk?

  1. Are you required to have an HST number if you’re a new grad?
Some clinics may require an HST number. Remember that HST won’t be paid to you if you don’t have one, which may impact your pay per client.

  1. How does the clinic pay out?
    • Is payment bi-weekly, monthly, by cheque, e-transfer, or direct deposit?
    • Note that some payment methods, like cheques, might come with drawbacks.

  1. Can I work outside clinic hours?
If you’re interested in adding hours after closing or on weekends, check if this is permitted.

  1. Will I be responsible for locking up the clinic?
This is an important question if closing duties are a consideration for you. Make sure you understand the clinic’s protocols for opening and closing.
