Perinatal Massage

Pregnancy or Perinatal Massage (commonly referred to as Prenatal Massage) seems to be misunderstood and has led some people to believe that massage therapy can help with conceiving. Unfortunately, this is not true. We will refer to pregnancy massage as perinatal, which is the period when you become pregnant and up to a year after giving birth.

What is Perinatal Massage?

Perinatal Massage is safe for clients who are expecting the same massage therapy techniques that are used during the treatments for non-expecting clients, however, there are some techniques that are contraindicated during pregnancy. Techniques which increase pressure on joints is not recommended for pregnant woman, as your ligaments are looser due to the hormone relaxion. Hormone Relaxion is a reproductive hormone produced by your ovaries and the placenta. It loosens and relaxes your muscles, joints, and ligaments during pregnancy to help your body prepare for birth.

Osteopathic Treatments and Manual Lymph Drainage can also be beneficial during your pregnancy, as long as there are no complications, or you are not a high-risk patient. Osteopathic Treatment uses light manual therapy to guide, release and restore the tensions and restrictions that build. It will help prepare you for delivery by ensuring the proper alignment of your pelvis. Manual Lymph Drainage is wonderful for pregnant woman who have swelling in their legs and hands.

A common occurrence with woman during pregnancy and after birth is Carpal Tunnel which is when the nerve in the wrist is compressed, causing numbness, and tingling in the fingers.

What to Expect at Your Massage Therapy Session

During your initial appointment or first visit with your massage therapist you will be required to fill out a health intake form. The form is important for us to receive as certain techniques may not be indicated during a treatment if certain conditions are present. We will review the intake form at your visit as well as a brief assessment to create a treatment and treatment plan that is best suited for your condition and goals. If you have any questions or concerns please speak to your therapist and we will be happy to help.

You may undress to your level of comfort and if you feel. Only areas that are to be treated will be worked on and unwrapped as needed.

During your massage therapy, you are invited to let the therapist know if the pressure applied is too much, too little or anything is uncomfortable. You are welcome to talk to your therapist during your session, you may ask to enjoy your treatment in silence or a little of both. Please remember this is your massage appointment!

Frequently Asked Questions

Yes, absolutely. The only time we wouldn’t recommend massage therapy is if your family doctor or specialist has indicated otherwise, high risk pregnancies/complications would not be cleared for massage therapy.

You can come in at any stage of your pregnancy up until about 2 weeks to your due date. Please make sure you inform the therapist if you suspect you are pregnant and if you are actively trying to conceive.

We do not have a pregnancy table at the clinic at this time, but we do have a pregnancy pillow that can be used on the table which allows you to lay on your stomach (if you feel comfortable) or we have the option to treat you on your side.

This really depends on your needs and goals. We would recommend booking the hour or 45 minute massages as this gives time for changing positions on the table and too address any concerns and areas you need treated.

Please note that if you have any of the following we recommend a doctors letter to confirm it is safe to proceed with a massage therapy session:

  • Experienced bleeding
  • Pre-term Contractions
  • High-risk Pregnancy
  • Preeclampsia
  • Previous Pre-term Labour
  • Severe Swelling
  • High Bloodpressure
