Manual Lymph Drainage (MLD)

There are treatments designed for many different pathologies, but essentially MLD is helping the body recover faster by stimulating lymph flow and drainage mechanisms.

What is Manual Lymph Drainage?

The lymphatic system is a crucial part of the body’s drainage and transport network, consisting of lymph vessels and lymph nodes. Its primary function is to transport and dispose of “waste material” from tissues into the bloodstream. This includes the removal of proteins, fats, cellular components, water, chemicals, and other organic and inorganic cell products, as well as cellular residues and foreign organisms like viruses and bacteria.

During this transportation process, the lymph fluid is cleaned, filtered, and concentrated, with many immune reactions occurring in the lymph nodes. When pathways become congested, blocked, damaged, or severed, fluids can build up in the connective tissues, leading to potential cell pathology.

Manual Lymphatic Drainage (MLD) can assist in maintaining the flow and function of this vital system. There are different levels of MLD treatment depending on the condition of the lymphatic system.

Level 2 Certification: This treatment is suitable for patients with a functioning lymphatic system and can be beneficial for various conditions, such as sprains and strains, migraines, chronic sinus congestion, and post-surgical recovery, including joint replacement and cosmetic surgeries. It is also effective for scar treatment. Level 2 MLD can be booked with Biljana or Jasmina.

Level 3 Certification: This advanced treatment is designed for patients with a compromised lymphatic system, including those suffering from conditions such as lymphedema, lipedema, or those recovering from cancer surgeries, chemotherapy, and radiation. Treatment at this level includes Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT), which encompasses manual lymph drainage, bandaging, exercise, and skin care. Level 3 MLD can only be booked with Biljana.

If the connective tissue is damaged—due to burns, chronic inflammation, ulceration, or hematoma—the lymphatic system is tasked with transporting the damaged cells, inflammatory products, and toxins away from the affected area. The faster this process occurs, the quicker the recovery.

How Manual Lymphatic Drainage Works

Therapists trained in MLD use specific techniques to manipulate skin and superficial lymph vessels in the skin making lymph flow faster. The pressure varies depending on the condition or location of treatment from very light to moderate. It is pain free, slow, rhythmic movement, that besides the lymph system also stimulates the nervous system encouraging relaxation.

Recommended treatment time is 45 or 60 minutes, most times it is done as weekly treatment or in some instances two, three times per week. The number of sessions varies greatly on the condition that is treated. For example: post surgery swelling can be resolved in just a few sessions where in case of the lymphedema MLD becomes very important in management of the condition.
