Perinatal Massage
Pregnancy or Perinatal Massage (commonly referred to as Prenatal Massage) seems to be misunderstood and has led some people to believe that massage therapy can help with conceiving. Unfortunately, this is not true. We will refer to pregnancy massage as perinatal, which is the period when you become pregnant and up to a year after giving birth.

What is Perinatal Massage?
Perinatal Massage is a safe and supportive treatment designed to meet the unique needs of clients during pregnancy. While many of the same massage therapy techniques used for non-pregnant clients can be applied, your therapist will make appropriate modifications to ensure safety and comfort throughout each stage. During pregnancy, the hormone relaxin naturally loosens ligaments and joints to prepare the body for birth, which is why deep pressure into joints or aggressive stretching is generally avoided. Instead, massage focuses on gentle, effective techniques that provide relief from musculoskeletal pain, ease aches and cramping, reduce tension on weight-bearing joints, decrease swelling, improve circulation, promote better sleep, and encourage overall relaxation for both body and mind.
Prenatal massage has a positive effect on the fetus in-utero by decreasing the stress hormone levels that the pregnant person maybe experiencing.

At Savannah Massage Therapy Clinic, we provide the health history forms online. We ask that you fill them out prior to your initial visit. What to Expect at Your Massage Therapy Session
During your initial appointment, you’ll be asked to complete a detailed health intake form. This helps your therapist understand your medical history, current stage of pregnancy, and any specific symptoms you may be experiencing. Certain techniques may not be appropriate depending on your health and stage of pregnancy, so your
therapist will review the form with you and may complete a brief assessment. Blood pressure may also be taken before and after your session if needed. Together, you’ll create a treatment plan that supports your comfort, safety, and goals.
After about 16 weeks of pregnancy, most clients are no longer comfortable lying on their stomachs. At our clinic, we offer side-lying positioning with supportive pillows, as well as the option of a pregnancy pillow designed to allow stomach-lying. However, the pregnancy pillow may not be ideal for everyone, as comfort can vary depending on how you are carrying. If you are lying on your back, a pillow will be placed under your right hip to shift the uterus off the vena cava for circulation and comfort. A semi-reclining position is also available and often preferred for clients receiving neck and shoulder treatments.
Throughout your treatment, your therapist will check in with you regularly to ensure both you and baby are comfortable. You are encouraged to let your therapist know if the pressure feels too light, too firm, or if any positioning is uncomfortable. Some clients like to chat during their massage, while others prefer quiet relaxation — you’re welcome to choose whatever feels best. Each session is customized to your stage of pregnancy, areas of concern, and symptoms, ensuring a safe and supportive experience for both you and your baby.
